Richard L. “Dick” Rein, 83, of Columbia Cottage of Hanover, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, April 21, 2025. Dick was born on November 11, 1941 in Lewisburg, PA. He was a son to the late Bright Rein and Miriam Catherman Rein. He was the last remaining of his six siblings. Dick attended Penn State University and graduated with a degree in forestry in 1963. He was a devoted lifelong fan of all things Penn State, especially the football team, and was a long-time football season ticket holder. He also received a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Southern Mississippi. He met his wife Susan A. (Drukten) Rein on a ski trip in Vermont. They were married for 55 years. After a brief stint with the National Forest Service, Dick was a longtime civilian Naval employee, first working for the Naval Oceanographic Office traveling the world and mapping the ocean floors. He later moved to a position at the Navy Fleet Material Support Office in Mechanicsburg where he remained until his retirement in 1999. In his spare time, Dick was an avid skeet shooter and served on the board of the Carlisle Fish and Game Association for many years, where he also devoted significant time to teach in the youth programs. Dick was also a devoted “Pop Pop” to his four grandchildren and loved attending as many of their sporting and school events as possible. Surviving are his wife Susan A. Rein, a son, Richard L. Rein Jr. and wife Jennifer C Rein of Chatham, NJ, a daughter, Dr. Jennifer A. Rein and husband Dr. Mark Goedecker of Spring Grove,PA , and grandchildren Jack and Ben Goedecker and Julia and Olivia Rein. A celebration of life will be at a later date.
