Obituary of Joseph Shepos

Joseph Shepos, 89, of Lower Paxton Township passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on August 4, 2015. He was born on December 14, 1925 in Shamokin, PA, son of Andrew and Stella Shepos. He is survived by his wife, Anne, and 5 children; Joanne Nye of Hummelstown; Thomas Shepos of Los Angeles, CA; Ann Louise Shepos of Camp Hill; Mary Sersch and husband Edward of Harrisburg; and Donna Eberts of Harrisburg. Lovingly referred to as "Pappy Joe", he was a family man who supported the children's and grandchildren's athletic games, dance recitals and all activities and life events throughout the years. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great grandchild as well as several nieces and nephews and two sisters -in-law, Dorothy Fox and Anne Schlagle. Joe's proudest accomplishments were serving in the United States Navy (LST 803) during World War II and recently receiving his High School Diploma from Shamokin Area High School through Operation Recognition. He was a faithful member of St. Margaret Mary Church where he served as an Extraordinary Minister, Lector, and past president of both Holy Name Society and the Athletic Association. He also served the church community as a Knights of Columbus 869, 4th degree member of Bishop Joseph Shanahan number 917, was an active member of the "Over the Hill Gang" who provided support to both the church and school, and was actively involved in the Festival Committee at St Margaret Mary for many years. Joe served as past president of the Penn Gardens Civic Club, was a member of the American Legion Post 730 Penbrook, and a life member of the VFW Post 1213 Rutherford. He enjoyed wood crafting and spending time with family and friends; especially the annual trip to Sea Isle City, NJ for family vacation. He enjoyed listening to swing bands and watching Lawrence Welk on Saturday evenings. He spent time traveling with his wife and friends to several countries including Rome, Italy. Joseph retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as Chief of Maintenance. Before that, he worked a custodial job at St. Margaret Mary School and Church and was a part time employee for Weis Markets. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Ann Keefer. A viewing will be held at Dailey Funeral Home, 650 South 28th St, Harrisburg, PA 17103 on Monday August 10 from 6-8pm with a Prayer Service at 8pm. There will be a viewing on Tuesday morning, August 11 at St Margaret Mary Church from 10 - 11 am. Mass will be celebrated at St. Margaret Mary Church, 2800 Paxton Church Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110 on Tuesday, August 11 beginning at 11am followed by a military burial at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at 1pm promptly. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Margaret Mary Church or School and can be mailed to the Parish Office located at 2848 Herr St, Harrisburg, PA 17103. The Dailey Funeral Home is honored to serve the Shepos family.
