Norman E. Oelschlegel Obituary

In loving memory of Norman Oelschlegel, Harrisburg, Aug. 14, 1932-Dec. 9, 2024.

A kind and gentle soul beloved by all who knew him, Norman grew up in Philadelphia’s

Frankford neighborhood with his siblings, Henry Conrad (Connie), Catherine (Pat), Mary

Grace and Lawrence (Larry). He was the fourth child of Conrad and Marie (Campbell)

Oelschlegel. A devoted, lifelong Catholic, Norman lived his faith through service,

generosity and love. He will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of

knowing him.

After graduating from Northeast Catholic High School in 1950, Norman earned an

accounting degree from La Salle College and an MBA from Temple University. His first

job was in the Accounting Department at S. S. White Dental Manufacturing Company.

When the Korean War began, Norman joined the U.S. Army Reserve. He was later

drafted, serving with the 7797 Signal Control Agency in Germany and France, rising to

the rank of sergeant. After his military service, Norman began a successful career with

the Pennsylvania Department of Banking, where he advanced to the position of director

of the Banking Bureau. He retired in 1991 and served as a bank consultant for Atlantic

Central Bankers Bank, Camp Hill.

Travel was one of Norman’s greatest joys. He and his friends and siblings explored

England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Austria,

Switzerland, Greece, Japan, Hong Kong and, his favorite adventure, China. A dedicated

volunteer for the Pennsylvania State Museum for 33 years, he was honored with the

Outstanding Service Award by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.

Norman was active throughout his entire life, skiing into his mid-80s as a member of the

55+ Ski Club, golfing at the Country Club of Harrisburg and staying fit with his friends at

the Harrisburg Area YMCA. He often attended daily Mass at St. Margaret Mary Roman

Catholic Church in Harrisburg and St. Paul Church in Stone Harbor, N.J. He also enjoyed

dining at the Progress Grill with his long-time companion Joanna Cummings.

Norman was predeceased by his parents and siblings. He is survived by his nieces and

nephews, Joanna and her extended family, the Enterlines, who loved him like an uncle.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday,

Dec. 17 at noon, preceded by visitation from 11 a.m. until noon. Interment with military

honors will follow at Our Lady of Grace Cemetery, Langhorne, PA. In lieu of flowers,

the family requests donations in Norman’s name to St. Margaret Mary Roman Catholic

Church, 2800 Paxton Church Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
